Basics & Privacy

Will my photos or videos be deleted?

No. The app never deletes original photos or videos from your photo library. It only exports copies to your backup destination and adds items to management albums.

Will my photos or videos be modified?

No. Your original photos and videos are never altered. To keep track of backed-up items, the app creates a Completed Album (default name "Backed Up") and a Review Album (default name "Needs Review") in your photo library and adds items to the appropriate album. You can rename these albums in the app's Settings.

Are my photos or videos sent to the cloud?

No. Your photos, videos, and personal information are never sent to the developer's or any third-party servers. Network activity is limited to retrieving originals from your own iCloud and processing Apple's In-App Purchase.

Can I use the app with iCloud Photos?

Yes. If you use iCloud Photos and the originals aren't stored locally on your Mac, the app will download them from your own iCloud before saving. Depending on the number of items and your connection speed, retrieving originals may take some time.

A prompt is asking for access to my photo library

Because the app reads photos and videos from the photo library on your Mac, it will request permission the first time it launches. Click "OK" in the permission dialog.

If you've already denied access, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos and enable access for this app.

Backup Destination & Drives

What can I use as a backup destination?

You can use any folder you have write access to — such as an external HDD, SSD, or a folder on this Mac. Use Select Destination from the menu to choose your destination folder.

Depending on macOS security settings, you may be asked to grant access to certain locations (Desktop, Documents, external volumes, etc.). Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security to allow access for this app.

My external HDD/SSD isn't showing up as a destination

Make sure the drive is mounted and visible in Finder. Unmounted volumes cannot be selected as a destination.

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the cable, or restart your Mac and relaunch the app.

Can I use a NAS?

Network drives can be unstable depending on your environment, so for the current version we recommend backing up to an external HDD or SSD. Please use it as a backup destination dedicated to your Mac.

What format should I use for my external HDD/SSD?

If you're using the drive exclusively for Mac backups, APFS is recommended. Other formats like exFAT also work, but APFS tends to be more stable for storing large numbers of photos and videos.

Note: Reformatting a drive will erase all existing data on it. If you have data on the drive, be sure to back it up somewhere else first.

Do I have to format the drive as APFS?

It's not required. However, for storing large numbers of photos and videos, APFS, which is native to macOS, tends to be more stable. If you don't need Windows compatibility and plan to use the drive exclusively with your Mac, APFS is a good choice.

Reformatting a drive will erase all existing data on it. Make sure to move any important data elsewhere before proceeding.

Backup Behavior

How does Mirror work?

When Mirror (Premium) is enabled, the app writes the same content to both your Main Destination and a Second Destination at the same time. Keeping two copies gives you an extra layer of peace of mind.

What happens if I disconnect my external HDD/SSD during a backup?

The backup will be interrupted. Reconnect the destination and run the backup again. Items that were already backed up will be skipped. Please do not disconnect the drive while a backup is in progress. Note that depending on when the interruption occurred, some files may be saved in duplicate when you run the backup again.

What happens if my destination runs out of space?

The backup will stop when the destination runs out of free space. Free up space or choose a different destination, then run the backup again. We recommend checking the available space on your destination beforehand.

The backup is taking a long time

If you have a large number of photos and videos, or if the app is downloading originals from iCloud Photos, the process may take a while.

A slow destination can also increase backup time. If possible, use a locally connected drive with fast transfer speeds.

The free version saves up to 33 items per backup. Upgrade to Premium to remove this limit.

Premium & Purchase

What does Premium include?

Premium (one-time purchase) unlocks four features:

  • Mirror / Second Destination: back up to a second drive simultaneously with your main destination
  • Spatial Photo backup
  • Spatial Video backup
  • Adjustable Max Items Per Backup (set your own limit beyond the free cap of 33 per backup)
Can I restore my Premium purchase on another Mac?

Yes. As long as you use the same Apple ID, you can restore your purchase on another Mac using Restore Purchase. It is processed as an In-App Purchase (one-time, non-consumable).

How do I restore my purchase?

Use Restore Purchase inside the app. Make sure you're signed into macOS with the same Apple ID you used when you made the purchase.
